Prof. DSc Emiliya Chengelova

Project Leader

Emilia Chengelova works at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. She graduated in Sociology with full excellent grades at the Faculty of Philosophy of Kiev State University T. G. Shevchenko (1987). In 1993, she obtained her Doctor in Sociology (PhD.) degree, which affirmed her enduring interest in the field of methodology and methods of Social Survey Research. In 2013, she successfully defended her dissertation on “The Holistic Approach to Constructing a Methodology for Survey Research of the Shadow Economy”, which won her the degree of Doctor of Sciences in Sociology (DSc.). As of 2015, Emilia Chengelova is Professor in Sociology at the Institute for the Study of Society and Knowledge, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Chengelova has 32 years of experience both in theoretical and pragmatic issues of Sociology. Her work is situated along two main lines: 1) Elaboration and implementation of theoretical and methodological issues, methodology design for social survey research on wide range of socioeconomic matters; 2) As a team leader or member of research teams studying socio economic issues.

Significant component of sociological expertise of Prof. Chengelova are Shadow economy studies. For the period 2000-2017 years, she successfully implemented key positions in projects focused on shadow economy and anticorruption studies. Her major sociological and analytical expertise in this area was proven under the project Restriction and Prevention of Informal Economy, contractor Bulgarian Industrial Capital Association (2010-2014). In her quality of Key Expert in Sociology, Prof. Chengelova was responsible for design and implementation of methodology for 16 different Social Survey Research carried out between all stakeholders in Bulgarian society. As a result of surveys done, Prof. Chengelova has elaborated the theory of Holistic Approach to Constructing a Methodology for Survey Research of the Shadow Economy.

Prof. Chengelova has 120 publications among which are 32 monographs (as author or co-author), more than 50 articles in refereed and indexed international databases.

Prof. DSc Karamfil Manolov

Karamfil Manolov is a Professor, Doctor Habil. in Sociology at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology. His main research interests are in the field of entrepreneurship. He has been working in the field of “shadow economy” since 2009, his main developments are related to entrepreneurship and “shadow economy” – “shadow economy” and the legitimacy of entrepreneurial activity; “shadow economy” and social inequalities, “shadow economy” and competitiveness.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Albena Nakova-Manolova

Team Member

Albena Nakova is Associate Professor and PhD in Sociology at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology. She has been working in the research field of ‘shadow economy’ for more than ten years in the aspect of the socio-psychological dimensions of the shadow economy, such as the ideas about the shadow economy and attitudes to engage in informal economic practices, tolerance to the shadow economy, challenges to diagnose and prevent the shadow economy.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Galina Koleva

Team Member

Galina Koleva is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences with PhD in Sociology. She has more than 35 years of experience in theoretical, empirical and practical issues of Sociology. Her research and scientific activities (projects, surveys, analyses, teaching and scholarships) are concentrated in the fields of business and entrepreneurship; social groups, employment and the informal economy, urban agriculture, rural economy and rural-urban relationships. She has been researching informal economy as a member of the sociological team participated in the project Informal Economy limitation and Prevention under Human Resource Development Operational Programme (2010-2013) and she has been publishing on that subject.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Shaban Darakchi

Team Member

Shaban Darakchi holds a PhD degree in Sociology. His main professional interests are gender, sexuality, ethnicity and religion in Eastern Europe and Bulgaria. Dr. Darakchi is a junior researcher at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He is currently a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Antwerp, working on a project investigating the structure and the development of sexual minorities and activism in Bulgaria. In 2014 he was a Fulbright Visiting Fellow at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, USA and in 2016 he spent 6 months at the Australian Centre for Sex Research (Latrobe University) as an Endeavour Fellow. He has published one book and more than 20 article, primarily in English.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Gerganov

Alexander Gerganov is an Assistant professor at the Social Survey Research Center, part of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. His main fields of specialization are corruption research, victimization studies (conventional crime), and grey economy. He focuses on methodology, statistical analysis in social research and mathematical modelling of big data and complex processes in the social sciences. He has participated in many multidisciplinary international research projects since 2005. Research Focus: Corruption, Conventional Crime, Hidden Economy, State Capture, Statistical Analysis, and Data Modeling.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Svetlana Aleksandrova

Svetlana Alexandova is an Assistant Professor at the Social Survey Research Center in the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. She is a Doctor of Theory and History of Culture from the South-West University Neofit Rilski, Blagoevgrad, Faculty of Arts, Department of Culture Studies. In the period 2012-2017, she was a honorary teacher at the South-West University Neofit Rilski, Blagoevgrad, Faculty of Arts, Department of Culture Studies. Her main research area and subareas include: European cultural policies, cultural participation, entrepreneurship in the field of culture, cultural studies, cultural policy, creative industries, European education policy, training in the arts, cultural management and public opinion.
